Chatlein i su Zumbi

Vernon Chatlein is een componist en een muzikant van vele kleuren. Afkomstig uit Curaçao, woonde hij twee jaar in Cuba en studeerde daar muziek. In 2009 verhuisde hij naar Nederland om te studeren bij de peetvader van de Curaçaose jazz, pianist Randal Corsen. Op zijn debuutalbum Peace, Love & Music (2017) verbond Vernon jazz en latin jazz met de ritmes van de Antillen. Sindsdien heeft hij met veel bands en projecten gespeeld, waaronder een aantal theaterproducties. De inJazz-aanwezigheid van Vernon Chatlein is voortgekomen uit het onderzoeksproject dat hij begon tijdens zijn verblijf op Curaçao tijdens de pandemie.
Zijn verkenning van een oud geluidsarchief genaamd Zikinza leidde hem door de geschiedenis van de Afro-Curaçaoaanse muziek en leerde hem over de medewerkers en pioniers ervan. Als eerste resultaat bracht hij in 2021 Voices from Letters: Imershón op het podium, een theatrale ode aan zijn voorouders. Chatlein i su Zumbi is de volgende stap, gevoed door de mysterieuze muziekstijl Muzik di Zumbi. Verwacht een mix van traditionele percussie uit Curaçao, ingebed in kamermuziek met elementen van jazz.
