An exploration of traditional Black Sea melodies, blending ancient Ottoman songs with contemporary electronics and improvisation by Sanem Kalfa, George Dumitriu, and Joachim Badenhorst.

The music of this project is an intense exploration of traditional songs from the Black Sea region. Creative Belgian clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst joins the Amsterdam-based duo Sanem Kalfa & George Dumitriu to bring the flavors of ancient Ottoman melodies into a contemporary language, with fresh nuances of electronics and open improvisation. The Turkish vocalist Sanem Kalfa and Romanian-born violist and guitarist George Dumitriu have been playing together for 14 years and have collaborated with many different musicians. When Joachim Badenhorst crossed their path in 2018, playing together felt like the most natural thing ever.

The original form of the songs, as they were performed hundreds of years ago, serves as the starting point for a contemporary interpretation. There are no written arrangements, only direct explorations—a concept characteristic of the Kalfa - Dumitriu duo, fully embraced by Badenhorst.
