De in Italië geboren Damiano Pascarelli is een veelzijdige componist, arrangeur en dirigent die in 2019 de prestigieuze Rogier van Otterloo Award won. Pascarelli werkt onder meer regelmatig samen met het Nederlands Metropole Orkest. Voor New Music NOW heeft hij een playlist samengesteld met zijn favoriete jazzalbums.

Kika Sprangers - Mind’s Eye
Kika Sprangers’ compositions and ‘sound’ are just fabulous. The band is supporting her music perfectly and the match between her saxophone and Anna Serierse’s vocals is really splendid.
Bernard van Rossum - Del Rio A La Mar
Besides being a wonderful saxophonist, Bernard van Rossum is an absolute master in combining elements from the flamenco tradition with jazz. His big band writing is just wonderful and, for those who haven’t done so yet, I’d recommend to check out his live shows too. I always find the combination of big band performance, flamenco singing and dancing very strong.
Fuensanta - Ensamble Grande (Live)
Fuensanta is just one of a kind and you could recognise her ‘voice’ as a composer and performer blindfolded. Her music goes from atmospheric open textures to very compelling grooves but her songs are always delivering a strong story that is engaging and moving the listener from beginning to end. The female choir of her ensamble grande is a very important part of their beautiful sound, and so are the contributions of José Soares and Alistair Payne on alto sax and trumpet.

‘Reunion’ is a composition of mine that was commissioned and performed by Jong Metropole. I was lucky enough to be able to feature the wonderful Kika Sprangers as soloist for this piece. This composition was written during the corona lockdown period and the title refers to the longing for making music together again, and performing in front of a live audience.
