Ruysdael's Windmill
The Ruysdael Quartet invited 25 composers to create works with complete freedom in style and theme. Many composers drew inspiration from the painter Ruysdael, while others explored themes of space, stars, and various musical genres such as minimalism, jazz, and 17th-century influences.
The Ruysdael Quartet invited 25 composers to contribute to a project that showcases a colorful spectrum of Dutch composition at the beginning of the 21st century. The quartet gave the composers full freedom in terms of style and theme. But what do you do with such a carte blanche? How do you express yourself in just a few minutes? It’s striking that many composers have chosen the painter Ruysdael as their inspiration, but themes such as space and stars also appear frequently. The result is a diverse selection of pieces that encompass lyricism, minimal music, 17th-century influences, microtonality, jazz, world music, and just about everything in between.
