The Ruysdael Kwartet invited 25 composers to create a commissioned piece, resulting in a diverse collection that serves as a snapshot of Dutch composition at the beginning of the 21st century. The quartet gave the composers complete freedom in terms of style and theme. But how do you approach such carte blanche? How do you express yourself within a few minutes? It’s remarkable that many composers chose the painter Ruysdael as their theme, with Landschap met Reiziger (Landscape with Traveler) being a central inspiration. Other recurring themes include space and stars. The collection spans a broad range of styles, including lyrical elements, minimal music, influences from the 17th century, microtonality, jazz, world music, and more, making for a colorful selection of pieces.
