Creature Dances is the captivating debut album by drummer Ludvig Søndergaard and his sextet. Bandleader Ludvig grew up in the tranquility of the Danish countryside but later lived in bustling, chaotic cities. He weaves these contrasts into adventurous jazz, where the six musicians push boundaries. They deliberately play raw, unsettling, sometimes even a little ugly. Dark passages alternate with beautiful, tender songs. Because without ugliness, there is no true beauty.
For Søndergaard, his mission is to interpret and translate the world, then present it from a different perspective. With this album, he succeeds brilliantly. This music makes you listen—and see—differently than you ever have before. This is jazz that doesn’t just sound, but also speaks.
Ketija Ringa Karahona (flute), Micheal Murray (alto saxophone), Chaerin Im (piano, synthesizer), Aleksander Sever (vibraphone), Samuel Kiel (double bass), Ludvig Søndergaard (drums, compositions)
