Persian Miniature

The Ruysdael Quartet asked 25 composers to create works with total freedom in style and theme. Many took inspiration from the painter Ruysdael, with others exploring themes of space, stars, and various musical genres like minimalism, jazz, and 17th-century influences.

The Ruysdael Quartet invited 25 composers to contribute to a project that serves as a colorful cross-section of Dutch composition at the beginning of the 21st century. The quartet gave the composers complete freedom in style and theme. But what do you do with such carte blanche? How do you express yourself in just a few minutes? It is notable that many composers have chosen the painter Ruysdael as their theme, while themes of space and stars also frequently appear. The result is a diverse selection of pieces, including lyrical music, minimalism, 17th-century influences, microtonality, jazz, world music, and virtually everything in between.
