The Ruysdael Quartet invited 25 composers to contribute to a project that serves as a vibrant snapshot of Dutch composition at the beginning of the 21st century. The composers were given total freedom in style and theme. But how do you approach such a carte blanche? How can you express your artistic vision within just a few minutes of music? It’s notable that many composers chose to draw inspiration from the painter Ruysdael, while themes of space and stars also make frequent appearances. The pieces range from lyrical to minimal music, 17th-century influences, microtonality, jazz, and world music, offering a diverse and eclectic collection of works.
