Maya Fridman

A striking reimagining of John Zorn’s Book of Angels, where Maya Fridman, Garth Knox, and their international ensemble blend strings, percussion, and electronics into an electrifying and evocative experience.

Cellist and artist-in-residence Maya Fridman joins forces with violist/composer Garth Knox for a special concert centered around Book of Angels, a cycle by New York’s musical magician John Zorn.

Having frequently performed and arranged Zorn’s work in the past, Knox revisits this cycle, which lovingly reflects on Jewish musical history. Fridman and Knox bring a fresh perspective to selected pieces from Book of Angels, including parts specifically composed for Knox. Alongside these, the quartet also performs other compositions and improvisations.

They are joined by an outstanding international ensemble. Soheil Shayesteh, a virtuoso on the kamancheh, enriches its mesmerizing sound with live electronics and visuals, blending Persian and Arabic traditions. Jacobus Thiele, a German percussionist fascinated by Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and Arabic rhythms, adds his dynamic artistry to the mix. Together, the quartet reimagines Zorn’s angelic themes while creating bold new material—an electrifying response to Book of Angels with a touch of the demonic. Or, as Fridman aptly describes it, “our own musical anti-angels.”
