Robin Coops

Director-composer for immersive operas and other music-driven works.

Director/composer Robin Coops (NL, 1988) creates immersive operas and other music-driven works. Although his projects are deeply contemporary, cross-disciplinary and make use of digital technologies, the human voice & body remain the key elements of his work. Tactile, mesmerising and uncanny at times, Robin’s projects address themes such as order vs. chaos, the fear and desire to loose control and multiperspectivity.

To realize his projects, Robin works together with various artistic partners, including the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, O. Opera Festival, Silbersee, Oorkaan. Robin obtained an MA Master of Film at the Netherlands Film Academy in Amsterdam, an MA Master of Music at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and a BA Theatre Direction at Toneelschool Maastricht. Besides his projects he is also a coach and  guest teacher at schools such as, The Opera Studio, The Dutch National Opera Academy, Codarts and The VR Academy.

In his music he wanders through different musical genres. He like the quality of a compact song in contrast to a wandering landscape in which it can reside. It results in expansive and dynamic theatrical musical journeys. The minimalistic and repetitive approach of harmonies, structures and sounds, give space to other disciplines as well.
