Calliope Tsoupaki
Thin Air
Calliope Tsoupaki’s Thin Air, written during the early lockdown, connects global performances via Festivals for Compassion. The solo work celebrates solidarity and the contemporary music community, emphasizing unity despite distance.
Conceived as a composition of 'solidarity', Calliope Tsoupaki's Thin Air was written at the start of the lockdown to travel the world. The solo work, first performed in June 2020, is now on tour, with performances delivered online by festivals canceled or restructured in the wake of COVID-19. Through Festivals for Compassion, Thin Air has become a collection of archived performances, brought together in a timeline that celebrates the contemporary music community.
As musicians, organizers, and audiences, we often experience the same music, unconsciously sharing it as it moves from place to place. In a year where everything moved to the same elusive location, Thin Air uses differences to highlight similarities, marking the distance between us to strengthen our solidarity.
