SAUL

A tragic tale of doubt and isolation, SAUL features Dirk Roofthooft in the title role, with music from the David Kweksilber Big Band and vocals by Claron McFadden. Composer Boudewijn Tarenskeen blends powerful drama with creative space for the ensemble.

In SAUL, this tragic king succumbs to doubt. He experiences God's selection for kingship as a curse, leaving him isolated in an ultimate battle with himself. The title role of Saul is portrayed by Dirk Roofthooft, a renowned Flemish actor.

Musically, there is much to experience in SAUL. The 26-piece David Kweksilber Big Band, the house band of the Amsterdam Bimhuis, provides a rich and dynamic soundtrack. This ensemble, made up of virtuosic musicians with diverse backgrounds—from classical to jazz—delivers an intense, captivating performance. Claron McFadden, the internationally renowned opera singer, contributes her voice as a full-fledged instrument, adding another layer to the music.

Composer Boudewijn Tarenskeen drew inspiration from the versatility and improvisational talents of the Big Band, aiming to balance the dramatic power of SAUL with space for the creative freedom of the ensemble.
