Salamander
Salamander, a collaboration between CoCoA composers, combines classical, jazz, and film music influences, inspired by Francisco de Quevedo’s vivid poetry. With themes like “burning ice,” the piece weaves contrasting harmonies into a unified, lyrical sound. Duo Bilitis, Ekaterina Levental and Eva Tebbe, beautifully capture its enchanting essence.
Salamander is the product of CoCoA, a collective of composers with diverse musical backgrounds, including classical, jazz, and film music. The project explores new creative territories through collaborative composition. Composers Anthony Leigh Dunstan, Aspasia Nasopoulou, and Floris van der Vlugt drew inspiration from the works of Spanish poet Francisco de Quevedo, whose writings often delved into mythical creatures. Quevedo’s vivid imagery, like the "burning ice" represented in the salamander, allowed the composers to explore a lyrical sound, blending contrasting yet harmonically unified colors. The piece is performed by Duo Bilitis, featuring Ekaterina Levental and Eva Tebbe, whose performance brings to life the intricate soundscapes born from this collaboration.
