Celia Swart

Our Patio

In Resonances XXI, Celia Swart’s composition for the Resonances XXI flute ensemble captures the journey of two individuals falling in love, symbolized by the patio heartbeat. With intertwining melodies, the piece explores the deepening of relationships through fluctuating textures and rhythmic shifts, conducted by Olivier Guion and directed by Guillaume Ruscon.

Resonances XXI presents a beautiful and intricate work composed by Celia Swart, written for the flute ensemble Resonances XXI. The piece tells the story of two individuals falling in love, symbolized by the pulsing, charged space between them. The patio serves as a metaphor for this beating heart where the lovers revolve around one another, positioned on opposite sides of the patio. As the piece progresses, they gradually converge towards the center, eventually entering the heart of the building for a deep embrace, becoming one.

The music is constructed around two almost identical melodies, symbolizing the two people, playing the same pitches but with differing textures. As the piece unfolds, these lines dissolve into the more fluid textures of the flutes, which are present from the start. The swelling flatterzunge clusters reflect the heartbeat of the patio, with its sound growing richer as the relationship deepens. The heartbeat is at times heavy with vibrato, at times quicker in rhythm, reflecting the evolving, multifaceted nature of love. Through the varied perspectives, the piece allows us to see how love grows richer and deeper over time.

The Resonances XXI ensemble, led by Olivier Guion, brings this piece to life with a variety of talented musicians, including Elise Battais, Patrice Bocquillon, Catherine Debever-Perrier, Océane Dhôtel, Delphine Goldstein, Florence Huet, Pierre Martinet, Patricia Nagle, Olivier Pédan, Marine Planchot, Karine Roynard, and Laurent Tallon. The direction of the piece is carried out by Guillaume Ruscon.
