Home

Home captures a 360° panorama of the Arctic, created by Maarten Loonen and Udo Prinsen. The images, inspired by Arctic nature and ecology, are animated and set to Martin Fondse's track "Home." Stefan Kwint added the northern lights element, creating a visual representation of 365 days in the Arctic, through a combination of art and science.

In Home, Maarten Loonen, station manager at this Arctic research station, refers to it as his "home away from home." Living and working in this region, Loonen conducts research on geese, ecology, and climate. For this project, Loonen assisted in creating an immersive 360° panorama image using a custom-built pinhole camera by Udo Prinsen. Positioned in Ny-Ålesund on Spitsbergen, between the Dutch and British polar stations, the camera captures four separate images on light-sensitive photo paper, which is then exposed as the sun passes by. The images were digitized and merged into a 360° panorama. These images were further broken down into layers and served as the foundation for an animation set to the track "Home" by Martin Fondse. The animation, inspired by Arctic nature and ecology, features elements such as Arctic terns and cotton grass. Designer Stefan Kwint contributed to the project by creating an impression of the northern lights in Touchdesigner, adding a winter element to the piece. Together, these elements provide an artistic representation of 365 days in the Arctic, in a 360° film.
