Compose-It
At November Music 2022, the Amstel Quartet worked with young composers in the Compose-it project. Over five lessons, the students learned how to turn their ideas into saxophone compositions, resulting in pieces that range from concert works to fun musical experiments.
In 2022, November Music collaborated with the Amstel Quartet, a saxophone quartet with an impressive track record and an ever-growing list of compositions they have premiered. Their many collaborations with composers to create new works make them the ideal ensemble for this project.
Young composers, ages 8 to 18, were invited to participate in this project and received lessons from composers Anne-Maartje Lemereis and Remy Alexander from the In de Knop foundation. Over five lessons, they gained insight into what a saxophone can do, the different saxophones in the quartet, and how to transform their musical ideas into full compositions. This year, seven composers created works during the Compose-it project. The resulting compositions range from serious concert music and modern idioms to musical humor and touching soundscapes.
