Klang Ensemble

Klang Ensemble performs John Cage’s Amores (1943), offering a socially-distanced interpretation of this innovative work for percussion and prepared piano, recorded for the Holland Festival’s online edition 2.0-2.0.

At Holland Festival, Klang Ensemble performs John Cage’s Amores (1943), a seminal work that remains strikingly contemporary despite being one of the earliest pieces the ensemble has tackled. The performance, a socially-distanced interpretation, features percussionist Joey Marijs and pianist Saskia Lankhoorn, and was recorded for the Holland Festival’s online edition 2.0-2.0. Amores is a ten-minute composition that alternates between two movements for prepared piano, filled with lyricism and tranquility, and two movements for an array of percussion instruments, creating a rich tapestry of sound. As part of Klang’s 2020 Diversions series, this performance highlights the continuing relevance of Cage’s vibrant approach to sound and structure, and underscores his influence on many of the composers associated with Ensemble Klang.
