Joey Roukens
Bosch Requiem
Joey Roukens’s Bosch Requiem, commissioned for November Music 2022, is a vibrant homage to the requiem tradition. Performed by Nederlands Kamerkoor and Amsterdam Sinfonietta, this work blends Roukens’s influences—pop, minimalism, and classical giants like Stravinsky and Morricone—into a powerful piece for both secular and religious audiences alike.
November Music traditionally begins with the Bosch Requiem. In 2022, it was composed by Joey Roukens, marking him as the sixth composer commissioned by November Music and Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ to write a requiem.
The performance features the renowned Nederlands Kamerkoor and Amsterdam Sinfonietta, conducted by Sofi Jeannin. The concert was recorded live on November 3, 2022, at Muziekgebouw.
For Bosch Requiem 2022, Roukens returns to his inner creative wellspring. He joyfully and virtuously delves through the history of music in his requiem. His energetic, sensitive music inevitably sweeps the listener away. Many influences converge in his compelling compositions: impactful pop music, the hypnotic rhythm of minimal music, and the classical refinement of composers such as Igor Stravinsky, John Adams, and Ennio Morricone.
The composer reflects on his work: “When I was asked to write a requiem, I didn’t hesitate for long. Since my teenage years, I have been drawn to the 'requiem genre' – whether it's Morales (the first requiem I ever had on CD), Mozart, Cherubini, Fauré, Verdi, or Britten, their requiems are among the most beautiful and profound works these composers ever wrote. My requiem is, therefore, a tribute to that long tradition of requiems that I love, and for this reason, I took the traditional Latin requiem text as the starting point for my piece. However, I omitted large parts of the text because I found them too 'laden' and strongly tied to an outdated Christian worldview. My goal was to write a requiem that could also hold meaning for people who are not religious or Christian.”
