ARES, composed by Eric de Clercq, is written and dedicated to Ensemble NOMOS, commissioned by the Fonds Podiumkunsten. The composition is inspired by Ares, the ancient Greek god of war, who relishes in battle for its own sake—enjoying the noise and clamor of conflict, the slaughter of people, and the destruction of cities. For the soundtrack of ARES, recordings of Ensemble NOMOS were made and then manipulated in various ways. By incorporating these manipulated recordings at specific moments throughout the composition, the piece creates the effect of an even larger ensemble, offering limitless sonic possibilities.
