Christiaan Richter

Afbuig-trilogy

  • Concert

During this concert, the complete triptych Af-triptych will be performed, namely Afbuigingsjuk – Afspiegelbreuk – Aftaktiel. The first two works have already enjoyed memorable performances during November Music. During this concert, Aftaktiel for accordion and string quartet will be heard for the first time at November

In his music, Richter enjoys virtuously building bridges between seemingly insurmountable musical influences. He likes to draw inspiration from early music, jazz, pioneering electronic sounds, visual art, and personal experiences. His ‘Afbuigingsjuk’ (2019) for solo accordion is an ode to the wonders of the deflection yoke (a magnetic component of an old TV). In the penetrating accordion work, one hears Richter’s love for jazz legend John Coltrane, the purity of early electronic music, and the meditative Bach chorales.

With his ‘Afspiegelbreuk’ (2023) for accordion and string quartet, Richter continues along the sonic path of the conclusion of ‘Afbuigingsjuk’. In the work, Richter explores microtonal harmonies and high-contrast counterpoint. Richter plays with colorful sound spectra like never before. In the brand-new ‘Aftaktiel’ for accordion and string quartet, ideas and details from ‘Afbuigingsjuk’ are further developed and explored, the composer reveals regarding the final movement of his exceptional triptych.
